The Science Program at Tassajara Hills is
collaboration
between
the classroom teachers and the science specialist. All students
in grades 1 through 4 come to the Science Lab once a week, 5th grade students attend the Science Lab twice a week. Primary
students (grades 1-3) for 40 minutes and upper grade students (grades 4-5) for 50 minutes.
The Science curriculum at Tassajara Hills
is based on State and District standards and combines textbook
materials and hands-on experiences. Beginning in September 2008, all students will be using textbooks from Macmillian. Each classroom has a complete
set of up-to-date Science texts. Students
read the text with classroom teachers then come to the lab to
do correlated activities or experiments.
The Lab is a well-equipped room
that was designed and outfitted specifically for science. Through
grants as well as generous support from PTA, the lab has been
supplied with everything from beakers to bugs; minerals to microscopes,
planetary models, and hundreds of science related books. The program
also maintains a garden and is in the process of setting up two
composting bins. All gardening materials are stored in a wonderful garden shed
that was built by a former Tassajara Student as an Eagle
Scout project.
