Meet the Masters
Meet the Masters is an age-appropriate art
enrichment program. Up to four artist units are presented in a school year. The whole school learns about the same artist at the
same time. Each unit is presented on 3 levels. Each level takes
into account the attention span, vocabulary, interests and skills
of the students. The school population is broken down as follows:
Beginning Level Kindergarten and 1 st Grade
Intermediate Level Grades 2 and 3
Advanced Level Grades 4 and 5
Meet the Masters uses a 3-part education
approach:
1) Introducing the Masters Assembly
slide presentation
Each assembly introduces a Master artist
to the students with a slide presentation. An art element will
be learned with each Master artist (i.e. texture with Van Gogh).
2) Learning from the Masters Learning
Packets for each child
These are 2-3 pages of exercises related
to the art element for that unit which helps to bridge the gap
between the assembly and the art activity. The packets will be
in the teachers’ mailboxes on the day of the assembly and
should be done before the art activity (ideally not the day of
the art activity). It is up to the teacher and the art docent
to determine who should be responsible for guiding this activity.
3) Working with the Masters Classroom
Hands-on Activity
A 60 minute art activity for each artist.
Lessons are connected to the Master artist by subject matter,
technique or medium.
The artist presentations should be accomplished
within a 2 week period.
Meet the Masters provides the art docents
with 1) scripts and slides for the assembly presentation; 2) video
instruction for the art projects and 3) detailed written instructions
for the art projects.
Meet the Masters offers the students a comprehensive
introduction to famous artists, which will hopefully give them
a greater understanding of and appreciation for the artist and
their work.
The following is the order of activities/responsibilities
for the MTM presentations:
- Teaching packets are distributed to the
art docents 2 weeks prior to the assembly
- Art docents are notified of times to view
the teaching videos (during the week prior to the assembly.)
- Learning packets are distributed to the
teachers the day of the assembly.
- The assembly takes place.
- The teachers guide the students through
the learning packets (within a few days of the assembly.)
- The art docents conduct the art activity
with the class (within 2 weeks of the assembly.)
The art docent is responsible for scheduling
the art class with the teacher. Try to get on the teacher’s
calendar as soon as possible. In addition to meet the masters,
the art docent also participates in the SAFE fundraiser by creating
artwork with there class. The artwork is entered in a grand judging
with other schools and auctioned off to raise money for our art
program at Tassajara Hills.
